The objective of the Accessibility section of West Yorkshire’s Local Transport Plan 2006-11 is to improve access to jobs, education and other key services for everyone, particularly those from disadvantaged groups and areas.
It also aims to encourage more effective accessibility planning by bringing together relevant agencies to work together to assess levels of accessibility and priorities for improvements locally.
Accessibility Strategy
The plan provides an Accessibility Strategy and first year action plan to ensure that barriers to accessibility are identified and improvements made through better transport. Download the Accessibility Strategy (367kb pdf)
Accessibility Schemes
The plan identifies the following schemes for improving accessibility in West Yorkshire
- MetroConnect: Branded bus services which connect with the main bus and rail network and improve accessibility.
- Free Town and City Buses: Designed to connect bus and rail stations with shopping centres, hospitals, colleges and universities, and key business and leisure locations.
- MetroLocal: A new concept in local bus travel that provides essential links within the community such as shops, post offices, supermarkets and community centres where regular bus services can not serve.
- Rural Transport: Programmeto address the transport needs both of people living in the countryside and those visiting rural areas for social and leisure activities, within West Yorkshire.
- New Shipley Bus Service Providing Link to Bradford Royal Infirmary
- New Service Connects South Kirklees with Barnsley
Accessibility Partnerships
The Accessibility Partnership includes representatives from the five West Yorkshire district authorities and Metro, Local Strategic Partnerships and representatives of the Health, Education and Employment sectors and other key organisations, such as the Government Office for Yorkshire and Humber, Highways Agency and Yorkshire Forward.
The Partnership meets every four months. Minutes from the meetings along with presentations and further information are posted below.

Health Sub-Group
A Health Sub Group has also been established to progress improved access to health services.
The Health Sub-Group includes representatives from hospital trusts, primary care trusts and mental health trusts across West Yorkshire, along with other key organisations such as local authorities.
