West Yorkshire has been awarded £2.04million for 2010/11 through the Urban Congestion Performance Fund.
The region beat its target for 2011/12 by eight seconds, reducing the time it takes a person to travel a mile in the morning rush hour from four minutes four seconds in 2004/05 and 2005/06 to three minutes 56 seconds in 2008/09.
Measures which have helped keep average journey times ahead of target include the construction and extension of bus lanes, vehicle tracking systems which give buses priority at traffic lights and work to enforce bus lanes.
The reward will fund projects aimed at further reducing congestion.
Metro Chairman Coun Ryk Downes said: "The frustration of congestion is something that we all experience at times so I am pleased that we have been awarded this funding for beating our congestion target and making people's journeys a little quicker and a little less frustrating.
"This extra money will enable us to continue our investment in congestion-beating schemes including more priority for buses, further enforcement of priority measures better information and initiatives to encourage greener modes of travel."
